APPLICATION FOR A PUPPY
- Congratulations on your pursuit of your Shiloh Shepherd! We have been mentored by experienced Shiloh breeders and the ISSA Community. We are furthering our education with the Breeders Training Program through the ISSA. We have hand-selected our dogs, taken part in the whelping process of our foundation dog, taken dog genetic courses, and have a deep love for this breed.
- Having a Shiloh Shepherd is a serious commitment that does require participation on your part. All of our puppies are REQUIRED to complete the minimal health testing stipulated by the ISSA of a 24-hour Alba Medical Holter Monitor (5-7 months), OFA or PennHip X- Rays at (22 – 26 months), and U.C. Davis DNA Cheek Swab on file including the test for Degenerative Myelopathy.
- Additional health testing for Pet-Upgradable/Breed quality which is outlined within the sales contract and will be necessary if these initial tests are passed. This additionally is non-negotiable as it is important to keep a minimum of three dogs from each litter’s genetics moving forward to maintain genetic diversity.
- We base our breeding matches on what will best further these dogs through genetic testing, NOT just on coat colour, or what is popular at the time, or what looks pretty. We follow ethical standards and are held accountable to a board and a governing club of the International Shiloh Shepherd Alliance. Purchasing a puppy from a reputable breeder (if it’s us or another Breeder within the ISSA) means that we are always here for you and your dog. You become part of our extended family from the moment we hand the puppy to you. We are here to support you in any way we can.
- We rigorously follow the Mandatory Health Testing for Breeding dogs withing the of the ISSA:
– OFA Hips
– OFA Elbows
– Degenerative Myelopathy
– Temperament Test
– Holter Monitor (Heart EKG)
– OFA Heart Auscultation
– DNA on file with U.C. Davis Including DM testing
- We operate on a ‘Wait List’ queue of a filled-out ‘Puppy Questionnaire’ with priority given to homes who are open to keeping Breed Quality or Pet-Upgradable Placements. We will not take a deposit from you until we have received a filled-out ‘Puppy Questionnaire’ and reviewed the application that you’ve provided. Our ‘Puppy Questionnaire’ is located on our Contact Us page.
- Please ask us to send out “Contract Agreement, X – Ray and Spay/Neuter Agreement”, that you will need to adhere to if you are adopting one of our puppies. You must follow ALL the first part of health testing for our puppies regardless of Pet, Pet-Upgradable, or Breed quality.
- You will NOT get to pick your puppy. Puppies are placed based on a Litter Evaluation (LER) done by ISSA approved evaluator and the breeders accordingly (see below). The more that you can tell us about yourself and your family, your likes/dislikes, household activities, and life situation, it gives us a greater understanding of what type of pup would excel in your family and home. We do try to take gender into consideration, but it’s always best to be flexible.
DEPOSITS AND CONTRACTS:
- To reserve a space on our puppy list, a $500.00 CAD deposit (that goes towards the purchase price of the puppy) is required AFTER we have re-contacted you, post reference checks.
- Note, on the Puppy Questionnaire: ‘Refunds will be made if we do not have a puppy for you within 3 litters, but NOT if you change your mind.’ This includes if you decide to go to another breeder. Please respect the fact that we take limited deposits and have turned other prospective puppy families away.
- Please contact us for the pricing of our dogs.
- Breed Quality Dogs: All out Breed Quality Dogs are placed in Co-Ownership contracts that must be strictly adhered to with rigorous health testing to be followed. All prospective Co-Owners of breeding dogs must take the ISSA Breeder in Training Program.
- Final payment is due two weeks PRIOR to the Litter Evaluation. If you have not paid in full upon pick up, we will not release the puppy to you.
PUPPY PLACEMENT AND SHIPPING:
- The Litter Evaluations are done at approximately 7.5 – 8.5 weeks of age. Pups are shipped or picked up within the three-day window following the Litter Evaluation. Other arrangements must be made ahead of time.
- Puppies will go home with microchips, dewormings, and the first round of vaccinations.
- If you cannot receive your pup within the two-day window following the Litter Evaluation, we will board your puppy for an additional rate of $50 CAD a day.
- Any additional Brokerage, additional vaccinations, or shipping fees are the responsibility of the buyer.
WHY DON’T I GET TO PICK MY PUPPY?
At Storm Runner Shilohs, we try to match our pups with our clients based on the information you’ve provided us within the “Puppy Questionnaire” and our Data from the Litter Evaluation Report (LER). We match our pups based on your responses in that document. Some puppies’ temperaments may not suit an extremely loud household whereas others would thrive in it and thoroughly enjoy such an environment. Some may love to hike and reside in active households, while others would hate it. Certain personalities in both puppies and humans can clash and it can cause frustration for both you and your pup. We would like to avoid this. That’s why we ask that you be honest with us. What do you like to do in your free time? Hike? Adventure? Leisurely walks? Watch Netflix? Stay around the house? Read a book? Do you have a yard or park nearby? After spending eight weeks with them, we get to know our puppies quite well. Our goal is to match you up with your new best buddy for the duration of the dog’s life. We try out best to accommodate your request for personality and gender. Sometimes the perfect puppy match won’t be the gender you preferred though.
WHAT IS A LITTER EVALUATION?
- A Litter Evaluation Report (LER) is a series of tests that explore the physical conformation and the personality of the puppies. This is conducted by other ISSA evaluators to help eliminate bias. Typically these evaluators sit on the board of the ISSA club.
- In the first part, we look for physical conformation including top line, withers, neck, heavy bone, deep chest, shoulder construction, teeth alignment, ears, nose stop and much more.
- LERs assist in approximately determining the puppies that most closely align to the “Breed Standard” to place with Breeders/Co-Ownership Contracts.
- Pet quality pups will have minor faults in accordance with the breed standard (eg. ears that are slightly too big, white hairs on the tail tip) but that doesn’t make them any less lovable. They’re still fantastic pups.
- In the second part of the LER, we look for temperament including a series of tests that measure sociability, elevation and forgiveness, submission, play and prey drive, gun sureness, and problem-solving ability.
- It helps give us accurate data on puppies’ tendencies when faced with situations they have never encountered.
- It is also a good indicator of whether a pup prefers to use its nose, looks to its people for guidance, is independent and slightly headstrong or happy-go-lucky.
- The LER gives us a snapshot of how a puppy temperament but the environment and how they are raised by their families will have a drastic impact on shaping their behaviour.
HOW MANY PUPPIES ARE IN THE LITTER?
We get this question daily. As much as we’d like to always be in the know, we cannot control how many wonderful little puppies occur in a specific litter. It can be anywhere from 1- 12 puppies. We get a good estimate from X-Rays the week before whelping but we usually do not share the exact number. Mother Nature controls how many puppies are born and boys vs. girls. We do our best to be accommodating to everyone’s needs.
BUT I REALLY WANTED A MALE/FEMALE?
- We try our best to accommodate your requests, but we can’t control Mother Nature and how she decides to combine genes.
- Please make sure to make a note and send us an email along with the filled-out “Puppy Questionnaire” if you are absolutely set on particular sex.
